The Calf muscles are connected to the heel bone by a band of fibrous tissue known as Achilles tendon. It is the largest and strongest tendon in the body. There are small sacs of fluid known as the bursae which provide cushion effect to the tendon at the heel area. If any injury occurs to the tendon due to injury either by the loss of blood supply or any high stresses on it, it is bound to hurt the daily routine of any person.
The various injured conditions of Achilles tendon are:
- Achilles tendon tear- Tear can be a minute one or big depending on the activity which can be sudden or gradual in nature.
- Achilles tendon rupture- It makes a pop like sound followed by swelling and pain.
- Achilles tendinitis- Frequent running, jogging or brisk walking can lead to inflammation of the tendon.
- Achilles Tendinosis- Gradual thickening of the tendon due to advancing age or overuse.
- Achilles Bursitis- Low riding shoes can irritate the tendon and worsen if they are worn repeatedly.
The various causes of Achilles tendon injury can be due to excessive pressure on it. They are:
- Poor fitting shoes.
- Flat feet.
- Improper warm-up during exercises.
- Jogging or running on hard ground.
- Weak calf muscles.
- History of previous tendon injury.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
The patients who experience tendon rupture have intense pain especially in the back region of the leg. Some of them may have swelling around the ankle area or unable to walk or climb up the stairs.
Firstly, a diagnosis is established using some physical exercises and then MRI, CT scans, or Plain X-rays are done to confirm it. The operation is done either using the closed technique or Open Achilles Tendon Repair Surgery. In the closed technique, several small incisions are made and the tendon is repaired through it whereas during the Open process the tendon is exposed and it gives a good approach as well as better judgement of the injured area. A cast is given after the surgical procedure which is irrespective of the type of process used.
If it is treated in a non-surgical way there is a possibility of re-rupture or wound infection, and even nerve damage can occur.
After the surgery patients are advised to exercise for an initial period of two weeks and then slowly the strain is increased. Generally, it takes four to six months to completely heal and perform strenuous activities depending on the patient’s desire and ability to react to them.
